This can be aided by the songs being heard in the sound tracks of films and adverts but, most commonly, the listeners drive to hear something new. Now they can go out and search for new music any way they could. When in years gone by, it would have been only what the radio played is what people listened to, despite their musical taste.

Assisted by the internet and an endless gigging schedule, groups are able to get their music out to the masses. There is no substitute for hard work in becoming popular but being heard is easier now than ever. An astonishing story regarding chart success is about a St Albans quartet called Enter Shikari. The band entered the album charts at number four before they had even been signed. There are festivals all over the world now catching on to the fact that the more diverse the line up, the people it will attract to the festival. Of course, there are still festivals loyal to a certain genre of music but they are bringing in lesser known acts and giving them a moment to shine and impress an ignorant audience. It is then up to the audience member to decide whether they want to stick around or not.

The internet is playing probably the biggest part in bringing new music to people. With new technology like MySpace, ITunes and Facebook, artists are now able to sell their music and let a potentially huge number of people hear their music. Not only does it give the artist the option of how many songs they would like to upload for the world to hear, it also lets the artist control the image they would like people to perceive them as. This is truly a great age for both the musician and their audience.
