An Environment Of Case Interview Methods For Employment
Times are tough; applications heavily exceed jobs
, so from under a tower of resumes employers sometimes use the case interview technique with potential employees. It's a "think on your feet" process, unlike those hours spent crafting an impressive resume. With one to five management staff sitting across the table, and an invisible clock ticking, there's no faking it. Choosing the "right" answers for them is not as important much the how and what.
For example: You've applied for a dining room manager position at an assisted care facility. The interview date is set. All research homework on that care residence has been reviewed. At the facility a staff person quietly gives directions to the board room where 5 management people occupy one side of a super sized table. On the other side sits a single chair.
Just as you begin to awkwardly sit down each of them introduces themselves. Twice you reach out to shake a hand, to air. The third person drapes himself across the table with his hand extended. He then steps back at least as embarrassed. Persons number four and five just nod.
"So we see in this resume that..." There's a nervous tuning out sensation from this usual scenario. "Yes I have a BA in business management, yes I volunteer teaching soccer, " all the usual resume echo questions. You wonder why there must be five people to make these simple inquiries. But then a woman, probably the big boss, says, "We'd like to ask some "what if" questions that could occur here so that we all better understand each other and the job responsibilities." You nod and smile.
"Suppose that there's a Valentine event planned here. The individual chocolate heart cakes for each plate have arrived, late, there's no time for another supplier, but the attached invoice price is 40% higher than quoted. Now what?" They have pens, paper, and sit watching.
Of course budget must be mentioned, it's always on their important list. "Of course, " you say, "I'd check the invoice for product and address accuracy, " then you pause, and scramble for more answers. They take notes, heads tilted, thinking, then staring. "And I'd phone the bakery before the driver left to speak to the manager with the understanding that we would discuss this problem later." They nod.
"OK, thank-you." You smile, pretend that question was easy. "Now let's imagine that one of our residents begins to yell at the dining room sever that he doesn't like his food. Suggest an appropriate response."
Handling hysterical residents, that would be interesting. Yes, the server would thanked, the resident calmed and offered something else from the kitchen.
"OK, thank-you. If all of this strain causes him to have a heart attack, tell us about your pro-active decisions." They watch carefully now, to sense panic.
You remember that your emergency resuscitation (CPR) ticket has expired. You think about late cakes, yelling or dead residents and wonder about this job. You stand up, "Thank you ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to withdraw my application." In some situations the case interview technique has advantages for not only the employer, but the applicant.
