Superb as it may seem, archery as a sporting event was not heard about during the first Olympic Games in Greece. However since the event has been going down for the past one thousand years, so it's possible that it may have been part of the Olympics sometime during the past. For the first time archery for men was incorporated in the Olympics in 1900 while for girls it commenced in 1904.

There were a lot of dissimilarities in the rules which governed the Olympics during those early years and after 1920, archery was no longer treated as a sport event. After many years, the global player nations accepted the Olympic Games rules but archery could only be thought of as a sport during the 1972 Munich Olympics. There are 4 archery events : Individual competitors ( men and women ) shoot 72 arrows at a 'bulls-eye ' target from a distance of 70 meters ( 229 feet, eight inches ). One shot must follow the other in a matter of forty seconds and the best score is 720 with a 'sudden death ' overtime shot which happens when there is a tie.

Each team has three archers and there are sixteen groups in the team events where each archer throws 72 arrows which are shot from a distance of seventy meters. In a tie score, each team member will shoot one arrow and the arrow nearest the middle of the target sets the winner. The scoring in this game is according to where the arrow hits the target, which is composed of ten rings so if the arrow hits the outermost ring, the archer gets one point, 2 points for the subsequent ring and ultimately 10 if the centre of the target is hit.

The bow employed in Olympic archery event is recurve bow and any arrow shot from this type of bow gathers a speed of 150 mph. These technically advanced bows are made of graphite, wood and fiberglass which stabilise the motion of the arrow which has to go in an ideal straight line so helping the archer to target perfect.
