. Around the world, it has been called in various names such as carrum, couronne, carum, karam, karom, karum, fatta and finger billiards. It has been originated hundreds of years ago and it is a game for all ages and its popularity is steadily growing. It can be played by two, three or four players and carrom game is played on wooden boards with four packets and has a rectangular line around the perimeter, which is the base line from which players make their shots. Similar to the cue ball that is shot in pools; this game involves coins and strikers that are essential to play carrom game.
A game consists of eight boards or 25 points, whichever comes first and points are counted at the end of each round. All combinations of shots are counted and both skills and luck are big elements of this game. The carrom boards you play matters and make sure that they are made of good quality wood. There are different types of carrom boards available in market and they are 3 Stars Amateur Board, Club Board, Extreme Training Board, Hexagonal Board, Jumbo Training Board and 5 Star Training Board. You need a smooth playing surface that helps you hit for the victory and different boards can be used by different people. For example, 3 stars amateur boards are suitable for adults who play entry-level games and there are certain boards like tournament boards, which are specifically designed for tournaments.
In this game, the players totally need nineteen carrom coins and it usually comes in three colors such as black, white and red with black and white comprising of nine coins and red as a single coin. The red is the most powerful carrom piece and it is called as queen and placed at the center of circle. If player wins the board with queen, then three points are added to players total score. Carrom strikers are essentially needed to knock the coins into corner packets and the striker should be smooth and round in shape, with a diameter not more than 4.13cm. These standards are prescribed by ICF laws and the weight of carrom striker should not be more than 15gms.
Generally in tournaments, ivory and metal strikers are not allowed and tournament amateur coins are specially designed for tournaments, and it is durable and made of high quality. To enable the pieces to slide easily, carrom powder has been used and it is essentially needed because boards are made of wooden material and if carrom powder is not used, then the player has to hit hard and it provides some sort of discomfort to them. All rules and regulations are formed by ICF and it is an abbreviated word for international carrom federation and they set the law for carrom game. The international governing body has delegates from different countries such as Srilanka, Malaysia, India, Germany, Maldives and Switzerland.
