The kimono is the traditional dress of the Japanese and it literally means a thing to wear. The literal meaning of the word does not take away from the romance and the attractiveness of the picture that the mind conjures when they hear this word. The kimonos have originated in Japan and therefore their designs have the basic elements of the Japanese culture and symbols.

There are many types of kimonos and the designs are being modernised with time. The types of kimonos vary with the occasions and the style of the kimono also depends on the place or the mood of the occasion that it is being worn to. There are specific kimonos that are meant for formal or semi formal occasions.

Tumesode and Furisode are the preferred types of kimonos for formal occasions. They are structured out of silk and they are quite expensive but they carry their worth beautifully.

The homongi or tsukesage are the types that you could wear to semi formal parties or tea tasting ceremonies etc. they are either constructed of silk or sometimes there are some that are made up of fine cotton for spring or summer time.

The yukata is another form of kimono that is popular with both the male and the female. It is basically worn as a nightwear or after a bath traditionally but nowadays it has conveniently been adapted as a very comfortable lounge wear. It is extremely fashionable as well.

The shiromuku and uchikake are the kimonos for brides. These kimonos are the ultimate in indulgence and beauty. They are structured out of brocade silk or white silk. They are the most glamorous forms of kimonos that are the pride and joy of a bride on her wedding day. Traditionally the mothers start preparing this kimono for their brides long before their marriages. They choose the correct fabric swatch and style and then they also have to choose contrasting yet complementing fabrics for the obi belts for the kimonos.

The kimonos are worn with an obi belt that is fashioned out of a wide swath of cloth and it is quite difficult to manage to tie the obi belt on ones own. In fact, it is not uncommon to seek professional help to get dressed in a kimono properly. Many types of kimonos like the geisha kimono are popular because of the attraction of the outfit that is fashioned to make the person feel like the most attractive person in the whole crowd. The grace of the kimonos is unmatched and complimented by their style.
