An Introduction To The County Of East Sussex, England

East Sussex, and English county in the South East of the country is an awesomely popular diverse vacation destination

. A wide variety of vacations can be taken ranging from rambling in the South Downs to seaside vacations. East Sussex really does offer a stunning range of vacation opportunities.

A great many visitors to the United Kingdom enjoy relaxing at the seaside and the southern part of the county of East Sussex features a long stretch of coastline, where there are towns such as Hove, Eastbourne, Bexhill-on-Sea, Hastings and Brighton.

The most well known East Sussex seaside resort is Brighton, the largest seaside settlement in the UK. Before the 18 th Century Brighton was little more than a small fishing village however in about 1750 a local physician began to recommend that his patients should bathe in, and drink, seawater for their health, saying that the seawater around Brighton was the most suitable. A few years later, in 1780, Georgian terraces where being built and the Brighton tourism industry had been born.

Tourism was further boosted by a visit by the Prince Regent (later King George IV) in in the year seventeen eighty three and again, in 1841, with the arrival of the railway (bringing with it huge numbers of day-trippers from as far away as London). Today the city gets approximately eight million tourists per annum and at times it appears that you can hardly move for Brighton guest houses and tourists.

Another popular East Sussex seaside town is Eastbourne. Located at the east end of the South Downs, it is one of the most sunny towns in Britain. Eastbourne's main industry is tourism and it has the expected pier as well as various other visitor attractions such as a beach (shingle), museums, four theatres and numerous parks & gardens, as well as such things as a bandstand. Happily it is easy to find cheap B & B, at least a little cheaper than many Brighton bed & breakfasts.

As well as the two popular seaside resorts discussed above, East Sussex also has the less well known, but extremely beautiful, seaside towns of Hastings, Bexhill-on-Sea and Rye, and numerous towns of interest inland such as the former market towns of Heathfield, Uckfield and Hailsham. Another town of interest in the county of East Sussex well worth visiting is Crowborough (located in the centre of the Ashdown Forest), plus the county town of Lewes and Battle as well as many more.
