The Apple iPhone 4S continues to enjoy a high level of popularity

, despite competition from a number of other manufacturers, especially those who produce Android devices, like HTC and Samsung. In this article I will look at some of the differences between iOS (Apples smartphone and tablet optimised platform), so you can make a more informed choice when selecting your next smartphone.

In order to display the differences, I will look at the Gingerbread version of Android found on the HTC Sensation XE, and the latest version of iOS as found on the iPhone 4S, by looking at some various aspects of each platform.

Interface

The iOS platform is well known for its simplicity, in terms of its ease of use and the user friendly layout. This is a major reason for the popularity of devices like the iPhone 4S. The interface simply displays apps in a 4x4 grid, with a shortcut to the 4 most commonly used apps at the bottom. By default, these are phone, Safari, Email and iPod, but can be customised to the apps of the users choice. To navigate between homescreens, simply swipe the screen to the left or right, to easily find the apps you are looking for. The Android platform, found on smartphones like the HTC Sensation XE, is surprisingly different to iOS. HTC Sense, the manufacturers custom Android interface is included over the top of the stock Android interface. This allows user to customise their phone to a much higher degree than most other handsets. Users are able to assign up to seven different homescreens, which can then be customised with apps, widgets, folders etc. On both operating systems, you are of course able to assign different homescreen and wallpaper images.

Apple devices like the iPhone 4S are well known for their ability to download apps from the famous AppStore which has over 500,000 titles available from a number of different categories. These are range in price from free, to several hundred pounds, and range from games, to office productivity tools, and everything between. The HTC Sensation XE is also able to download apps from Google Play, which until recently was called Android Market. This has less apps but the number is increasing to a point where it is rapidly catching up to the AppStore. The fact that there are now more active Android devices than iOS devices has not been ignored by app developers, and many apps which were previously only available on the AppStore are now being optimised for Android devices also. The HTC Sensation XE and other Android phones are also able to download widgets, mainly through manufacturer specific services like HTC Hub.

Choosing between an Android or iOS device is likely to come down to personal preference, but from a logical viewpoint, it is clear that Android comes out of top for those who prefer a high degree of customisation on their phone, whereas those who prefer a simple user interface are likely to find iOS a better choice. Both Android and iOS platforms are improving with every update, so whatever you choose, you are unlikely to be disappointed.
