An Introduction To Wideband Global Satcom Systems

Wideband global SATCOM systems are a step towards a global communications flood. The system itself is planned to be run by the United States defense departments in conjunction with the same Australian departments. SATCOM systems are made up of three separate parts, which are the satellite, the terminal and the user. By interfacing all of these systems together, global communication will not only be available in a simple and reliable fashion, but also with astronomically increased limitations. It has been said that the bandwidth capabilities of just one satellite will be able to surpass those of the entire system currently used by defense forces worldwide. The increased abilities of the system will allow both the Australians and the Americans to better run their overseas operations.

In essence, the SATCOM systems will be used to increase the tactical and navigational capabilities of both countries' armed forces. By increasing the bandwidth of communications, the information being sent across the system can be far more complex in nature, allowing the armed forces to be fully informed of all the situations around them. Although the applications are now mainly based around tactical warfare and the maintenance of forces on foreign shores, the potential that the technology provides could eventually lead to widespread cheap communications for the entire planet. With the current manufacturing being done by Boeing, there is great expectation that a mass market variation will be available at some point. SATCOM systems hold within them a great amount of future potential that is yet to be unlocked. Given time and the correct investment, the possibilities are almost endless. From the top levels down, there is the potential for exponential growth within an industry that many people rely upon to run a normal life.

What SATCOM systems are providing in terms of both long and short term returns are the likes of which have never been seen before. For the short term, you have the benefits of armed forces that have already been described. In the long run, the technology that can potentially filter down into the mainstream could mean an end to the communications deadlock many countries now find themselves in. Africa is a great example of where satellite communications technology can really make a difference. Many countries on the African continent are lacking the infrastructure to hold normal telephone communications. Although at first the technology would come with a price tag that they could not afford, it would only be a matter of time before the scaled down technology would be affordable to the everyday man or woman. As with many technologies that we now take for granted, the armed forces are leading the way in pushing the boundaries of what the world thinks is possible.
