An Introduction to Betting Teasers

Imagine a world in which a "tease" was a good thing! Well

, in sports wagering

circles, it can be. If you're not sure what a teaser is, or for those who could use a quick

reminder, a teaser is a combination of two or more football or basketball games where the

player wagers against the spread or total. By betting teasers you get a much better line in

exchange for lower payouts. Generally football lines can be teased 6, 6.5, or 7 points, and

basketball lines can be teased 4, 4.5, or 5 points. Teasers are becoming more and more

popular with bettors, probably in no small part due to the number of close losses we've

all had from time to time. When your team fails to cover the spread by two points, it's

only natural to wish that you had the ability to change the spread. With teasers, you do.

Let's say you like the Grizzlies -6 and the Nuggets +3, but you're not sure that the

Grizzlies will win by that much, and you have a feeling the Nuggets might keep it close

but fade towards the end. With a 5-point teaser, you could make the spreads Grizzlies -1

and Nuggets +8, meaning that the Grizzlies must only win outright and the Nuggets can

afford to tail off towards the end and still coveryour bets are far easier to win. While a

2-team parlay at the original spreads would pay 2.6 to 1 (conventionally written as 13/5),

the 2-team teaser generally pays at around 10/13. Risking $65 would win you $50 from

the teaser, but could win $169 from the parlay. However, the parlay gives you a much

poorer chance of winning.

When one of the games in a three-or-more-game teaser results in a push, the

teaser is reduced to the next level. If one leg of a 4-team teaser is a push, the teaser would

pay at 3-team levels, etc. Make sure you know how your book handles 2-team pushes,

because there is no such thing as a one-team teaser, and thus you book will have to

handle a 2-team push in their own manner.

I'm often asked why teaser payouts are so low. The answer is simple: the house is

at more risk with teasers than any other kind of bet. Take the following hypothetical

situation, and consider the following: Philadelphia -6 vs. Baltimore, total o/u 46. Using 7-

point teasers, four plays could have been made on this game:

1. Philadelphia +1, Over 39

2. Philadelphia +1, Under 53

3. Baltimore +13, Over 39

4. Baltimore +13, Under 53

If Philadelphia won by a touchdown, 24-17, every one of these teasers would be a winner.

The house would lose on every one of these wagers. However, depend ing on the situation

and the original spreads, it is possible for the house to cash in on more than half of the

possible wagers, so it balances out.

Unlike for straight wagers and parlays, there is no way of calculating the house's

"edge" because it depends on what the lines are set at and on the teams picked in the

teaser. This becomes critical when analyzing how to best bet teasers. Because there is no

way of mathematically calculating proper payouts or odds, the lines offered at different

books will vary greatly. Shop around for the best deals that maximize value while

ensuring you get the combination of points and teams you desire from the teaser.

Finally, I started this article by talking about teases, so let me finish by talking

about sweethearts. Sweetheart teasers offer far more points in your teasersGoSportsBet

offers 10 points for football and 7 for basketballbut they also give lower payouts.

Becoming familiar with the various kinds of teasers is a great way to add to your

arsenal as a sports bettor. We all have weeks where we've got a great feeling about a

team, but the price just isn't right. With teasers, it can be.
