An Irish Pub Brief History

Merchants travelling through the green lands of Ireland would stop into one of the many authentic Irish pubs to have a drink and a rest

. The pubs (short for public houses) did not require a membership to enter unlike the private houses that were available as well. So the rich had their membership to authentic Irish bars while the working class members of society frequented the pubs.

The Irish pubs history is steeped with the proud Irish culture and lore. The original authentic Irish pubs of the middle Ages were roughly put together. The furniture was from wood, the walls were stone, and the floors were either wood or cobblestone. There would be a large fireplace with hanging oil lamps. The atmosphere when a weary traveller walked in was warm and welcoming, a place for people to gather and socialize, sing, relax, tell stories, and exchange the latest local gossip and rumours. This was also the place to get word of what was going on in the rest of world from the many merchants that would stop for a rest. In addition to ale the pubs would also sell food and hardware items.

In the 19th century the British rule had become overwhelming oppressive and had ruled the Irish pubs illegal. The independent Irish spirit was not going to give in to that type of rule and the pubs flourished. They became a place to vent your feels about the Crown or in some cases a place to coordinate the underground rebellions.

This warm and welcoming atmosphere, charm, and all the lore that goes with it is still popular today. Replicas of authentic Irish bars are being built in communities all over the world. With our overly tech based society it is good to take a step back in time. To gather with friends and share a pint at one of the local authentic Irish bars. The only modern addition you are likely to find in your local pub is a TV set. These may become very important during popular sporting events. As people would gather to share stories and songs in the middle Ages, today people gather to support their teams with other likeminded individuals.
