Because of its size, these boxes can accommodate a number of things that can fit and that the sender thinks the recipient would like, regardless of whether those items can be bought cheaply in the Philippines, such as non-perishable food, toiletries, household items, electronics, toys, designer clothing, or items hard to find in the Philippines.

However, what made it more popular among many OFWs is its cost-efficiency. If the items were sent individually or in smaller boxes through postal services, the cost could be significant. But there are several disadvantages to its use.

Disadvantages of balikbayan boxes

Although balikbayan boxes are very cost-efficient compared to using smaller packages, the use of these boxes are also known for its disadvantages. One disadvantage of using these types of packages is its speed of delivery. Because of its size, these boxes are usually transported through container ships, which is said to take weeks to even a month before it arrives. There is also the issue about the lack of a solid delivery date.

Other method of sending gifts

Other than the use of packages, Philippine-based online services such as online gift shops and flower shops have also become very popular in for many overseas Filipinos. One reason is because of its convenience in sending gift to the Philippines while another advantage is the speed of its delivery, which is said to only take 2 to 5 working days.
