The day can be a slog no matter what your age

The day can be a slog no matter what your age. We wake up and do mostly the same tasks day in and day out. It is not so much that we do not like the stuff we do, we simply have trouble doing the same thing all the time. That said the world can not be run with everyone on vacation all the time. Trying new things and being adventurous is a luxury and most of us have to work for our luxuries. This is true not just of adults slaving away in offices but also of kids who spend their days getting educated and do not even know how important that time actually is.

For all of these people there is one shining hope during the day. It's not the ping of an instant message from a friend or a funny YouTube video that sweeps through the office. It's not even a pleasant chat with a coworker or fellow student. It is in fact almost always some sort of food or beverage. It drives us in our days in ways we will never quite understand. We think about food and drinks more than almost anything else. The reasons are probably fairly simple. While we obviously eat to live, there is something in our heads that is tied directly to our taste buds. It fires off pleasure receptors in our brains like almost nothing else can.

That cup of coffee or can of soda does indeed have caffeine in it, but if we are being honest the real kick of the whole thing is that for each sip you take it is the beverage and not the mountain of work in front of you that matters. This is why office vending machines and school vending machines matter so much. They are a little bit of escape, a little bit of a vacation, a little taste of luxury, that can be enjoyed in between all the other remedial junk that comprises our days.

That office vending machine or the school vending machine in that one hallway is an oasis of sorts. A shining example of what our lives could be. Salty and sweet and above all uncomplicated. Just a joy as pure as sunshine. Flavors, tastes, smells, satisfaction, these are the things that make our internal lives feel joyful and fulfilling. It is strangely small as a moment but it can tie a day together and offer a brief ray if relief.
