An Overview Of Leather Industry Development In China
Chinas leather industry consists of five main industries
, including curriery, shoemaking, leather products, leather clothing and fur products, as well as many other supporting industries such as leather science and technology, leather chemical and leather machinery. After a 20-year rapid development, Chinas leather industry has formed a complete system from produce, management, scientific research to talent cultivation. China has become the main producer of leather and fur products in the world.
According to statistics, there are totally 8086 state-owned enterprises and of non-state-owned leather, shoes, leather clothing, luggage, handbags and other leather and fur and related products processing enterprises whose annual sales income is over 5 million Yuan. The total output value of corporate industry is 603.3 billion Yuan with an import and export value of $ 44.8 billion, which plays an important role in the international market. At present, the leather industry is facing many difficulties and pressures. However, according to the analysis of domestic and foreign senior experts, for quite a long time in the future is a good opportunity to develop China's leather industry.
The advantages for China to develop leather industry: Rich resources of raw hides and skins, a complete industrial chain, huge processing capacity, the world's mid-level processing technology and product quality, a large potential market with 1.3 billion populations, stable socio-political environment, and so on. These conditions are difficult for the peripheral countries or those in other continents to achieve in the following 20 years. Therefore, in recent years, Chinas leather industry is trying to overcome various difficulties and strive to be the biggest leather producer.
According to the statistic from National Bureau, we had 819 leather enterprises with an above-designated size, the number of employees was about 15.4 million, total industrial output value was 109.6 billion Yuan, accounting for 0.7 percent of the national industrial output value with an increase of 13.5 percent; light leather production was 690 million square meters, an increase of 0.4%. Small and medium-size enterprises accounted for the vast majority, accounting for 99.6% of the total number of enterprises with an above-designated size, only about 0.4% of the enterprises were large enterprises.
The leather is divided into light leather and heavy leather; these two leathers are distinguished by their tanning methods and uses. Light leather generally refers to the leather with softer texture and is made by the use of chrome tanning or chromium plant combination tanning method, such as the surface of shoes, clothing or bags. Heavy leather in general refers to the leather made by the use of p tanning, having hard texture, and being used in the manufacture of soles, industry and other special purposes. Light leather is the main business the country does and it production accounts for more than a half proportion in the whole industry.
Since the reform and opening up policy, China's leather industry has been rapidly developed. Leather production in 1978 was 26.59 million, and increased to 690 million square meters in 2009, with about 200 million standard pieces of leather. At the present time, China has become the most renowned worldwide leather-producing country.
Leather industry is labor-intensive which follows a produce and trade pattern transferring from high labor cost region to the lower one. In the 1960s, the world's leather and shoe-making center was in Italy, moved to Japan and Korea in the 1970s, transferred to the China Taiwan region in the 1980s, and in 1990s, moved to mainland China, making China the world's prominent leather processing and marketing area.
