In the late 1950s a large percentage of people were purchasing second hand cars and light vans
. Vast numbers of these vehicles having been manufactured some few years previously were not in the best condition, and some were not regularly serviced, thus numerous vehicles used on the road were potentially dangerous, often with defective brakes, lights and steering.
In 1960 the Ministry of Transport decided that all vehicles over ten years old should have their brakes, lights and steering checked every year, this became known as the MOT test. The testable age was reduced to 3 years by 1967.
The MOT Tester is a person authorized by the government body called VOSA (Vehicle Operator Services Agency) and will conduct an inspection and comprehensive checks around the vehicle. These checks will include interior, exterior, under the bonnet and under the vehicle.

You may be asked to produce your MOT certificate if your vehicle is involved in an accident, and you could be fined if you do not produce an up to date certificate.
