No matter which type of curry is prepared, it is extensively cooked in the mustard oil, and you can experience use of mustard paste and seeds in the food. The food is not spicy generally as the Bengalis are not fond of that hot and spicy food.


The people from West Bengal eat fishes from estuaries, while East Bengalis catch the fishes from the rivers of the region. Chicken and mutton dishes are also very popular in the Bengali cuisine. They cook the non vegetarian-dishes in very simple manner, using fewer spices, and also add vegetables to their non vegetarian dishes, especially fish. The vegetable which are most loved by the Bengali community are potatoes and eggplants, and they add these vegetables to almost every dish.


Fish stew recipe is also very popular in both West and East Bengal, and make use of common ingredients and cooking techniques. Some of the ingredients are added as per the availability and the changing taste of people.

Bengalis are known for their love for food and are also popular as very good hosts. They show very good hospitability towards their guests. The Bengalis mostly serve fish and meat dishes to the guests, along with typical Bengali vegetarian delicacies. They also serve fusion dishes which are the current favorite of the younger generation.

No Bengali cuisine is complete without the mouth watering sweet dishes like Payesh, Misti doi, gurer sandesh, Rasomalai, etc. Most of the Bengali sweets are prepared using Chenna or cottage cheese. The sweet dishes of Bengal are popular worldwide, and form a very important part of the Bengali matrimony.
