An Overview Of What Is Garden Mulch And How It Helps In Better Gardening
Garden mulch is any substance used to stimulate soil for targeted development of plants
. This concomitantly prevents the bedding in of weed seeds, the erosion of the soil or the evaporation of water out of the ground. Mulch is commonly seen in public parks and gardens, and may take many forms wood chips, for example, or crushed stone. The choice of mulch material is based either on the availability of different types of mulch; the aesthetic requirements of the gardener; or specific requirements of the plants that the gardener is trying to grow.
The garden mulch works initially by warming the soil over which it is spread. If mulch is introduced at the beginning of the growing season, it can accelerate below the soil growth by preventing the earth from dropping in temperature at night. The moisture in the soil is also stabilised by not being able to evaporate through the mulch rather it reforms as droplets on the underside of the mulch and re-enters the soil in the growing area.
Mulch itself offers no nutrition for plants, so weed seeds falling on or into it through the usual channels are unable to germinate or take hold. The seeds planted below the surface of the earth, prior to the application of garden mulch, are encouraged to germinate and grow faster and will push through the mulch naturally as they begin to leaf or flower.
There are drawbacks to garden mulch namely that it can prevent rainwater from entering the soil underneath it. If it rains on mulch, any water that has been unable to make it through the matting and into the soil simply evaporates from the surface of the mulch once the rain stops.
In home gardening, mulch can be an excellent way to maintain flower beds and borders without the intrusion of unexpected and unwanted weeds. Care must be taken in the section of the garden mulch type, specifically where wood is used in the mulch makeup. Wood chips and other wood based mulch forms can contain termites or termite eggs, so users are advised never to lay wood chip mulch right up against their property. Out in the garden is fine but in some countries gardeners are advised to leave a gap of at least a few inches between any wood chip mulch installation and the property walls.
Some types of mulch are in fact ground covering plants, often referred to as groundcovers. A groundcover is a type of plant that spreads out along the earth rather than raising itself up towards the sun (for example, a daffodil would). While a living mulch of this type may initially look very good, and protect the intended plant while it germinates and sprouts, it is often the case that the gardener has to kill it off to prevent it competing directly with the plants designed to grow in its area.
Garden mulch is created in controlled conditions to ensure its suitability for gardening specifically, to make sure that pathogens, decomposed animal material and potential weed or parasite seeds are all rendered harmless.
