An Overview of the ITIL V2 Library

Ever since it first realized major successes in its implementation, the ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) has developed from version 2 to version 3. The difference between the two versions is that the scope of version 3 is much broadened, especially in the area of services.

The ITIL entities of version 2

In version 2, there were only three practitioners and one management category. An outline of the course shows three practitioner trainings; (1) training for support and control, (2) training for release and control and (3) training for agree and define. Respectively the three refer to (1) the resolution of incidents and problems, (2) the creation, maintenance and modification of the system and (3) the interaction of the system with external entities such as suppliers and customers. In this last training was included finance and payments.

In version three, we have 2 practitioner trainings left but the scope of each one is far bigger than in former trainings.

The first module is devoted entirely to the basic hardware and third-party software used for installing the local area network and internet connectivity. It is divided into (1) service design (design and planning of the communication technologies), (2) transition (the intermediate phase prior to implementation), (3) service operation (implementation), (4) service maintenance and (5) service strategy (fine-tuning the service to coincide with company goals).

In the second module, we see together all the three modules for practitioners in version 2. The first part, now called 'operational support and analysis' corresponds to the 'support and restore' of version 2. The second part, called 'service offerings and agreements' corresponds with the version 2 'agree and define'. The third part called 'release, control and validation' corresponds to the 'release and control' of version 2. In addition we have a portion for keeping track of resources, securing resources, planning for resource distribution and risk.

Although there are companies now running on the ITIL system version 3, many others question the need for upgrading. However, it has been announced that, soon, the version 2 library is to be withdrawn and further support will no longer be available for it. Just as companies will have to upgrade to version 3, people who are planning on taking up ITIL training and certification should train for version 3.

In all honesty, since inventory and resources are a vital part of any system, it makes good sense to follow the recommendations of the people who created ITIL and forge on to version 3. There won't be any modifications, just addenda to widen the scope of control that management can exercise over the system.

It will be good to remember that when the ITIL system first made its appearance, there was a great deal of skepticism as to its effectiveness. History does tend to repeat itself.
