, stopped in the small indigenous fishing town. This was communicated to the Crown and in 1517 Don Gaspar De Espinosa, a Spanish lieutenant, decided to settle a post there. In 1519, Pedrarias Dvila decided to establish the Empire's Pacific city in this site. The new settlement replaced Santa Mara La Antigua del Darin, which had lost its function within the Crown's global plan after the beginning of the Spanish exploitation of the riches in the Pacific, and hence panama was born. Panama broke withSpain in 1821; however the laid back colonial attitude still persists making it an idyllic spot for a vacation.

It is hard to think of any metropolitan city anywhere with so many fine beaches nearby. Along the Pacific Coast just outside Panama City, begin a string of pretty beaches of white sand and sapphire blue waters. The question arises what all to do on a Panama Vacation?

Rio Mar is the most popular surfing beach year-round. Punta Chame is good for windsurfing certain months of the year, particularly the dry season.

An increasing number of American snowbirds and retirees are choosing to buy a second home in this area. It has unbeatable attractions: uncrowded beautiful beaches, competitive housing prices, and proximity to metropolitan Panama City. They love the fact that they could surf everyday.

Another attraction of the Pacific Coast beaches is their proximity to the cool and picturesque mountain communities like El Valle de Anton and Los Altos de Maria, just half an hour away. You can easily make a day trip there from the beach.
