An excursion to Cairo from Sharm

Each year, holidaymakers arrive at the successful destination of Sharm from United Kingdom. They come to take it easy by the beach or pool. Some want to dive and other spend hours snorkelling on neighbouring reefs. There are sufficient excursions offered for travellers and tourists to Sharm and among the more well known ones is an excursion to the capital of Egypt, Cairo.

Cairo is home to the world notable Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx but the day excursions to Cairo will offer you so much more than merely these ancient monuments. From Sharm el Sheikh, tourists can either travel to Cairo by road or air. Either way, its an early morning start with road excursions leaving at close to 2am and flights at approximately five in the morning. It all means a long day ahead but it is absolutely worth the effort.

Itineraries can vary on trip to trip but as a rule starts with a pay a visit to the Cairo Museum or to give it's proper title "The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo". Almost all of the morning is spent at the museum and it is packed with some amazing pieces. Some of the more superb items are those that were discovered in the tomb of the boy Pharaoh Tutankhamen including the notable gold and blue death mask. There are also many items of furniture and ornaments and one thing that is apparent is how well the colours are preserved in many of the items bearing in mind they are 1000's of years old. Having said that there is so much to investigate in the museum which means holidaymakers and visitors have to choose the areas they want to take a look at.

From the museum, the group is taken down to the River nile for lunch aboard a river boat. There is a fair variety of food and for entertainment there are also dancers. On the other hand, you can easlily watch the skyline dotted with various Cairo hotels and other landmarks pass by as you sail up and back to your departure point.

Next stop are the Pyramids of Giza. Looking at the majority of photos, you should be forgiven for believing the Pyramids are in the middle of the desert but that isn't so. The Pyramids and Sphinx are merely on the edge of Cairo. It is difficult not to be amazed as you get near to the Great Pyramid thanks to the actual scale of the it. You're able to have a lot of time here to wander round the Pyramids and there are no absence of local people trying to sell you a broad range of mementos or rides on their camels. There are ample opportunities to take photos before the tour bus drives you a bit further down to the Sphinx. Once again, you will be given the chance to purchase a wide range of souvenirs and there are more photo opportunities. Nevertheless, the Sphinx has not worn nearly as well as the Pyramids consequently you can't get as close to it. Its late afternoon as the excursion leaves Cairo's most notable tourist points of interest but there remains to be time for one or two further visits.

The first of these stops is at a fragrance shop where your are asked to try some of the the majority of perfumes the shop offers. From here the tour bus begins to head back to the airport with one last stop on the way. Papyrus is the paper like material made by the age-old Egyptians from the pith of the Papyrus reed. It was used to write on but now, it is a popular tourist souvenir, almost always with pictures of age-old Egyptian gods and similar images. At the Papyrus shop, there is a wide range of Papyrus available and holidaymakers and visitors can also observe a display of how current day Papyrus is created.

The tour coach departs and the day trip to Cairo is over. The tour party now returns to the airport for the flight back to Sharm el Sheikh el Sheikh or the road journey. The day tours to Cairo from Sharm el Sheikh are quite tiring but are great value. For tourists staying in Sharm el Sheikh, it is a great way to see many of the attractions of Cairo without actually staying there.
