Sociology is developed from the word "societus" meaning society. It is one of the social sciences that study people's behavior, lives, and their relationship with the broader society. Sociology therefore stresses on the proper study of human relations and behavior. Under this study, a closer look into a particular social problem will be identified, and an intersection between race, class and gender will be focused on.
Social problem
A social problem is an attitude or condition considered undesirablebya significant number of people a round you, invoking negative reactions. Social problems pose a threat to the society's stability, law and order. Social problems include murder, drug abuse, violence and burglary (Orenstein, 2005)
Drug abuse in Atlanta, Canada
News about youths being involved in drugs filled the news bulletin on this particular Tuesday. With two month to leave campus, I was not keen on the goings as I was busy preparing for my last paper. The first years and second years were deeply involved in drugs, was the talk of the day. A similar story had also appeared in the Reuters that morning. A survey on youth both in colleges and various states was taken and the results showed that performance had shown a drastic drop in the class work in their various schools. Rowdy behavior and disrespect to the peers was also depicted.
An abrupt search in one of the tuition centers in Atlanta was conducted in various classes and almost fifteen students aged fifteen to eighteen had rolls of drugs ranging from Cocaine, Marijuana and Heroin. The most expensive drug like Heroin was sold to the students considered coming from high class social backgrounds and cheap stuff to mostly the blacks and Asians. This was a wake up call on the administration. The found students indicted their fellow friends found in all the classes, it was a shock as this showed three quarters of the school was deeply involved in drug abuse, both from the poor and rich backgrounds, both male and female students ,all races were involved. A revelation into the cause of all the detected foul behavior was found. The students had network a cross Canada who did the supplies, they included whites, blacks, Spanish and Asians. Crime in the neighboring Midis estate of Canada had also gone up by 15% despite the authority's efforts to curb the behavior. The vice was demonstrated through rampant rape cases car hackings and burglary. Parents on being summoned confirmed their fears when they narrated in turns how their children had changed at home. It was a case of influence between the students that would cause them life time effects.
Lucky enough in CU boulder no search was carried out and who knows what could have been found. To me this was the worst experience of my life; having to read how youth of my age succumbs to drug abuse. They had lost direction in life and had to start rehabilitation, when they should be chatting their way forward in life. Everybody else realized how social problems have little to do with the social structure one is coming from.
Sociological view
The sociological view refers to the ability to see the relationship between a person, the experiences and how it affects the larger society, instead of looking at separate events. Sociological views are extracted from theories such as the conflict and the functionalism theory. The two look at how the constituents of a society in which one comes from affect his or her behavior. The important of them being the norms, values and the structure that makes up the entire society (Orenstein, 2005). The sociological view of drugs and drug abuse tries to dig into the chemical effect of the drug, such that, when a certain drug is consumed by human beings it sets off behavioral effects in the human body system. Sociological view also tends to apply the system blame approach where the institution is scrutinized on the role played in the drug abuse by students. Questions such as, why these students have deviated from the norm are also studied. This is where the institutions such as, marriage patterns and various parenting trends like authoritative or permissive parenting are involved. Studies have shown that drug a buse is one of the consequences of permissive parenting, although this is yet to be proved.
Conclusion
As many youth and students get entangled with drug a buse everyday the question remains what the role of the society is. Sociology is one of the social sciences that study people's behavior, lives and their relationship with the broader society. Sociology therefore stresses on the proper study of human relations and behavior. As drug abuse continues to be seen as a social problem- which is an attitude or condition considered undesirablebya significant number of people a round you, invoking negative reactions, Some people ague that as long as the person under the effect of drug abuse does not affect those a round him. This people, who most of them were parents did not put into consideration the impact of this substance to the future health of youth. The sociological view of drugs and drug abuse tries to dig into the chemical effect on human body, such that, when a certain drug is consumed by human beings it sets off effects in the human beings system.
