For local inhabitants, Independence Day is a significant day. They gather at Cellular jail in groups and pay tribute to Indian freedom fighters. Nicobar wood pigeon is commonly found in these islands and it is a state bird. It is relatively bigger in size as compared to other pigeons but has small head. These pigeons feed on insects, berries and seeds. Munda Pahar beach is in Chidiya Tapu and it is surrounded by lush green mangroves. Situated about 30 km from Port Blair and southernmost tip of South Andaman, it is an ideal picnic spot. Karmatang beach has coconut plantation and beautiful landscapes. This particular beach has proximity to Mayabunder. Hathi Tapu is another name of Elephant beach and it has amazing marine life and coral reefs. One can see countless elephants on this beach and take ride on this colossal animal. Sea Plane service is the best feasible way to reach there. Andaman Nicobar islands are preeminent for ornithologists and nature lovers. These fabulous islands have fulvous-breasted woodpecker, mynas, sunbird, megapode, shama and various other species of birds which are rare in other locations. Ross Island was preceding capital of these islands and Port Blair is the current capital. So many beaches of these islands are in crescent shape.
