Angela Osborn DDS adds OralDNA testing to list of services
Lone Tree, CO (March 28, 2011)Angela Osborn DDS is proud to introduce OralDNA testing. OralDNA testing is a revolutionary method that identifies specific periodontal (gum) diseases as well as risk level for serious periodontal diseases and HPV-related oral and throat cancers.
Approximately 80% of American adults suffer from some form of gum disease [American Dental Hygienists' Association], and most don't know they have it because symptoms often don't show until after age 30. But adults aren't the only ones in jeopardygum disease is found in children and teenagers as well.
Gum disease poses serious risks to oral health. It causes inflammation of the gums, the formation of pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums), and even tooth loss.
Periodontal disease doesn't just affect oral health. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, gum disease is linked to such serious health conditions as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases, Alzheimer's disease, preterm, low birth-weight babies, stroke, osteoporosis, and diabetes.
The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, which constantly forms on the teeth. But there are several factors that increase the risk for gum disease.
Smoking is the biggest risk factor for gum disease. Other risk factors include stress, diabetes, certain medications, poor diet, obesity, pregnancy, menopause and puberty in women. And research has proven that up to 30% of the population is genetically susceptible to gum disease.
Through the MyPerioIDPST test, Dr. Osborn can identify a patient's genetic risk for gum disease. If gum disease is already present, she can pinpoint the specific type of gum disease using the MyPerioPath test. She can then customize a treatment plan that will reverse damage, prevent more damage and create a new smile that will last for years to come.
Additionally, Dr. Osborn can use the OraRiskHPV test to determine if a patient is at-risk for HPV-related oral and throat cancers. Oral cancers are a major cause of death and disfigurement and can spread to other parts of the body, according to the National Cancer Institute. They can become difficult to treat if they aren't detected in time. But oral cancers are often highly treatable when caught early. And patients who know they are at-risk can take steps to prevent it.
