The Animal brand was originally founded in 1987 by two men who werent designers but in fact surfers who had become increasingly frustrated at losing their watches whilst surfing or being in the water during water sport activities. Every watch that they used was in no way durable or robust enough to stay on the wrist and the surfers felt that there was a niche in the market for key a new type of secure strap. They got to work on designing a strap which was simply made from webbing and Velcro yet proved extremely effective.

Animal Watches - The Design Process

With minimum funds, the surfers worked in a small bedroom in one of their houses and produced just enough of the straps to sell to their friends who were also surf and water sport enthusiasts as a way of trial and testing the product. They wanted to make sure the strap was completely effective and so it was tested by a number of people in a number of sports and this is still a vital part of the design process today. The watch straps were a big hit and rapidly became popular after the surfaces sold them to a more extensive market in Hawaii and home of the surfing industry, Australia. What made the strap innovative and popular was the simplicity of its design in relation to how effective it was. Not only was the strap used for water sports but it also became popular in the snowboarding, skating and mountain biking industries.
