Introducing the baby .
In Victorian times,around two weeks after the birth, the young mother would send out her 'at home' visiting card, and attached to this would be a small card, with the name of the baby in the centre, and date of the birth in the lower left hand corner. The small card would then be attached by a small white ribbon, tied in a bow.
This signified to friends that they would be welcome to visit, meet and greet the new baby. Usually visiting times would be indicated, to fit in with the routine of the mother and baby, in the afternoon, for a couple of hours.
Choosing Godparents.
Godparents would have been chosen earlier on in the pregnancy.As the Godparents would have considerable influence in their God-child's life. They were chosen for their financial Status, and Social Standing, possibly helping to choose the school, and if required making a financial contributing for their education. Thus improving their God-child's opportunities in life. They would also become the child's Spiritual Guide, ensuring that they participated in church activities and study, and lead a Godly life.
Timing of the Christening.
The Christening would normally take place four to six weeks after the birth. Guests would dress in the same mode as for a Wedding, because a Christening Occasion was considered to be as important as a Wedding.The choice of God-parents could be from within the family, or, close friends of the family. Once a request was sent inviting the prospective God-parents to accept, it was considered bad etiquette to refuse.
Gifts God-parents give.
The type of gifts given by the Godparents were usually a reflection of their Social Position. Most often made from silver, a knife fork and spoon, silver mug,a claret jug,or silver plate. Quite often the gift would only become useful later on in the child's life.
Today a Christening is Still an Important Occassion.
Today, whilst the Christening is still a very important occasion, some of the formalities have relaxed. Invitations will be sent out, with an r.s.v.p., and the church or venue booked. Godparents would have been chosen from within the family or close friends, but, Status and Social Standing are not generally as important. Thus, the implications of being expected to take over the welfare and upbringing of their Godchild has less significance.
Godparent Gifts.
Godparents are able to choose from a vast array of silver gifts and keepsakes. They can have these personalised with an engravement. Some gift ideas would be; tooth and curl boxes, a silver scroll to put the christening certificate into, knife fork and spoon set, silver framed album, to keep the photographs taken on the christening day, being some examples. Or, if prefered, gifts which their God-child will be able to use when they are older, silver cuff links,a silver locket, or perhaps an identity bracelet, would be some suggestions.
Spiritual Guidance
However, a commitment to the Spiritual Guidance of the child remains as important. Ensuring that their Godchild attends church. It is considered an honour to be invited to become a Godparent, but remains a responsibility, which is not taken lightly.
