Annual Carnival Time In Nice From February To March
Nice Carnival is one of the largest and most colourful in Europe
. For over 15 days, the city rocks, dances and celebrates at this circus like event. So what better excuse to forget the dullness of winter and take advantage of cheap flights and great value apartments and fly to Nice.
The carnival is from the 17th February to the 4th March every year.
The theme for 2012 was the King of Sport, which was a reference to the 2012 London Olympics, as well as to the sporting dynamism of Nice, France and on a wider scale, the planet.
Known for its colourful extravagance, the Nice Carnival comprises various parades, presenting a total of 20 meticulously decorated and all-around dazzling floats, which will readily engage in the eagerly awaited Battle of Flowers. As the tradition goes, this is when elegantly dressed characters throw mimosas, gerberas and lilies into the public along the famed Promenade des Anglais.
At night, the parades of lights brightly illuminate the city and may even prove to be more spectacular than their daytime counterparts. All in all, over 1,000 musicians and dancers continuously entertain the crowds at many locations in the heart of Nice as they parade along the promenade and through Place Massena right in the heart of Nice and next to the Old Town.
The theme for 2013 will be "King of the five continents", the theme remaining true to its vocation of universality. A journey through time and space opening all perspectives to imagination. As for the guest of honour, the French-speaking world, Nice playing host to the French-speaking Games in 2013, it was a natural choice. Each Carnival represents an original short lived production.
Being a Carnavalier is not a profession, but a passion or a vocation. The large workshop where these craftsmen work, called the "Maison du Carnaval" is transformed into a magical setting for several months. Even if new procedures, techniques and materials have paved the way for the mechanisation, articulation and modernisation of elements, the basis for float and big head construction has remained identical to its origins.
