Answers about LASIK Eye Surgery Complications
If you're considering having LASIK, then you probably have questions about LASIK eye surgery complications. Fortunately, there are few common complications and they are easily treatable and/or self limiting. LASIK surgery has a solid success rate of effectiveness and safety. Complications that cause loss of sight or that can't be corrected are extremely rare. Let's take a look at the most common ones; dry or irritated eyes, infection, under correction and regression and see how they are treated to give you a better understanding to base your own decision on.
About 1/2 of LASIK patients experience dry eyes, some with irritation, for the first 6 months following the surgery. One of the criteria for the surgery is that you must have adequate tear production. The eyes are more easily irritated after surgeyr because of increased sensitivity after the procedure. As the cornea heals the irritation or dry eyes will resolve, most cases resolve on their own with no intervention within 6 months. In the meantime, the condition can be treated with artificial tears, prescription eye drops and/or oral flaxseed oil. This will relieve the existing irritation and help the eye heal without causing further soreness.
The incidence of infection with eye surgery is lower than in daily contact lens wearers. When you change your contact lenses daily you are at risk of introducing infection every day. No matter how carefully you wash, your bathroom sink isn't going to match a surgical suite for sterile conditions! In addition you may be prescribed antibiotic eye drops pre and post surgically as a preventative measure.
Under correction or the feeling of under correction is sometimes caused by the patient's unrealistic expectations of what eye surgery will achieve. The procedure is highly effective but, especially in patients with a complicated prescription, not 100% guaranteed perfect. Under correction can also be caused by unexpected reactions to the surgery and healing. Every person's body heals in its own way and sometimes in ways that are not anticipated which can affect the outcome of the surgery. If warranted, under correction can be corrected with an enhancement, a second surgery to fine tune the refraction. This would be performed after it is certain that healing is complete and the vision is stable.
Occasionally a patient will heal well and it all looks great, then a few years down the road the vision begins to deteriorate. This regression is sometimes related to simple aging and the changes that our eyes undergo. It most often occurs in patients who had treatment to correct hyperopia or farsightedness. As we get older our eyes naturally become more farsighted, which is why we need reading glasses as we age.
