The larvae digest the food and they include the byproduct which is consumed by the queen and the workers.

The ants will basically walk through that dust and when they walk on that dust they will groom themselves and then they ingest it and that's going to kill off the workers. Dusts also speed the process up. And so one thing you don't want to do is that you don't want to disturb that mound. They are nocturnal creatures and the best time to see them would be before sunset.
