Antequera At The Crossroads Of Andalucia Villas
Take a step back in time when visiting ANDALUCIA VILLAS
, especially when in some of the smaller villages in and around the mountains of the region. Antequera is one of those towns at the crossroads of the region. It is a town where the time line can almost be felt running from the early Bronze Age to the present. It can be seen in the walls of the houses along the narrow cobbled streets and the back corner villagers who still create works of art in the many ceramics bowls, jugs and leather goods.
There is a profusion of burial grounds known for the two Bronze Age dolmens. The Roman baths, an Arabic castle and Gothic churches all have their place in this typical medieval town in Andalucia. The spires of her many churches can be seen from a distance as you approach; the walls and towers of its Arabic fortress below it. The spreading landscape rich in farmland completes the picture with the irrigation system built by the Moors utilizing the river Guadalhorce.
It has been one of Andalucias most fertile regions for centuries and today is the countrys leader in growing asparagus, cereals and olives, another import from the time of the Muslim occupation. If you happen to be here in the summer, the fields turn a delicious gold with the banks of sunflowers that grow along the roadside.
La Pena de los Enamorados, or The Lovers Rock is an enormous crag of limestone that towers above the village. The name that comes from a local legend when a young couple who loved each other so deeply threw their bodies from the rock in part because their love was not allowed to be: she was a young Arabic girl from the nearby town of Archidona and he was a Christian man from Antequera. When they ran away from home, soldiers of the town of her father chased them up the mountain; knowing that their families would not allow such a marriage between the two religions the lovers threw themselves off the top of the mountain. The legendary romance was adapted by Robert Southey in his Laila and Manuel; the lovers in his adaption were Muslim girl and one of the Christian slaves of her father.
When the Romans ruled this part of the Iberian Peninsula, the commercial centre became known for the high quality of its olive oil. While under the Moorish rule it became known for its tolerance of religions, which lasted until 1212 when the Catholic monarchs and a coalition of Christian kings drove them out at the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.
