Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery Involves Less Invasive Procedure
Majority of the individuals suffer from arthritis mostly in the hip and knee joints when they are at an advanced stage of life
. When they are at the initial stage of this disease, they do not feel any pain. But at later stages, they suffer such unbearable pain that they are forced to undergo hip replacement surgery to get some relief. Among others, anterior hip replacement surgery are opted by individuals who suffer from this disease because it is less invasive, less painful and allows faster recovery time. These are some reasons why this procedure is gaining huge popularity compared to the posterior approach.
In the anterior hip replacement procedure, the surgeons carry out the surgery from the upfront instead of from the side or the back. Since it is done from the front, the surgeons are not required to detach the pelvis muscle in this procedure. Since the gluteal muscles in the pelvis and the femur are responsible for proper hip function, it remains untouched during the anterior hip replacement surgery thus leading to a faster recovery. However, not all patients are good candidates for this procedure. This surgery is mostly for those individuals who suffer from severe pain in their hips due to arthritis.
Also individuals who suffer from this disease but are overweight or have undergone other hip surgeries are usually disqualified from opting for anterior hip replacement surgery. This surgery is carried out by experienced surgeons as it can involve a lot of complexities. Once the surgery is complete, the patients have to take a bed rest for a few weeks.
Similar to other surgeries, some complications may arise from
anterior hip replacement surgery but it is usually a rare case. Some of the complications that may occur include deep vein thrombosis, infection, nerve damage, femur fracture and revision of surgery. Similar to this surgery, the total knee replacement surgery is for those individuals whose knee joints have been damaged by progressive arthritis or trauma or other rare destructive disease of the joint. Doctors recommend this surgery only when medications fail to relive the patients from the unbearable pain. Before the patient decides to undergo this surgery, it is best if he understands all the benefits and the risks involved.
Some of the most common risk of total knee replacement surgery include pulmonary embolism. This is when the blood clots formed in the legs after the surgery travels to the lungs. This may cause shortness of breath, chest pain and some patients even suffer from shock. Besides this, other risks include nausea and vomiting, chronic knee pain and stiffness, urinary tract infection, etc. But these complications occur in very rare cases. After total knee replacement surgery, the patients can enjoy all their daily activities minus the pain.
In the total knee replacement surgery, the damaged knee joints of the patients are replaced with artificial materials. Pot-surgery, patients are required to stay in the hospital for a few weeks to undergo therapy sessions. The participation of the patient in this session is very important if he wants to recovery faster. After the
total knee replacement surgery, the patients cannot walk. Thus, the physical therapist will offer different exercises which will help the patients to resume the movement of his legs again.
