Anti-depressant Medicines Work On Nerve Cells In The Brain.

Doctors mainly prescribe Prozac to treat depression i.e

. a continuing depression which interferes with the routine functioning of an individual. The common symptoms of major depression often include changes in appetite, sleep habits, and mind and body coordination, a decreased sex drive, increased fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, difficulty in concentrating, slowed thinking, and suicidal thoughts. Prozac is also prescribed to treat panic disorders which include panic associated with agoraphobia (a severe fear of being in crowds or public places). People suffering from panic disorders usually undergo panic attacks or feelings of intense fear that develop suddenly, often for no reason. Various symptoms occur during the attacks, including a rapid or pounding heartbeat, chest pain, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath. In children and adolescents, Generic Prozac is used to treat major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over). Generic Prozac is used to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, including mood swings, irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness. Prozac is also used in the treatment of bulimia (binge-eating followed by deliberate vomiting). This medication may help decrease bingeing and purging behaviours in bulimia. In addition, Prozac is used in combination with olanzapine (Zyprexa) for the treatment of resistant depression and treatment of depression associated with bipolar disorder.

Generic Prozac (Fluoxetine) is also used sometimes to treat alcoholism, attention-deficit disorder, borderline personality disorder, sleep disorders, headaches, mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, Tourette's syndrome, obesity, sexual problems, and phobias. You may talk to your doctor about the possible risks or benefits of using Prozac for your condition. The FDA approved Generic Prozac (Fluoxetine) in December 1987.

Anti-depressant medicines work on nerve cells in the brain. There are numerous different chemical compounds called neurotransmitters in the brain. These act as chemical messengers between the nerve cells. Serotonin is one such neurotransmitter and has various functions than we know of. When serotonin is released from nerve cells in the brain it works to lighten ones mood. When it is reabsorbed into the nerve cells, it no longer has an effect on mood. It is thought that when depression occurs, there may be a decreased amount of serotonin released from nerve cells in the brain. SSRIs work by preventing serotonin from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. This helps prolong the mood lightening effect of any released serotonin. In this way, Prozac helps relieve depression.

Generic Prozac is an oral medicine which is to be taken with a glass of water daily. It can be taken with or without food. The dosage for depression in adults is 20 to 80 mg of Generic Prozac daily. The recommended dose for treating depression in children is 10-20 mg of Generic Prozac daily and Bulimia is treated with 60 mg of Generic Prozac. Obsessive Compulsive disorder in adults and children is treated with 20-60 mg daily and panic disorder is managed with 10-60 mg daily. The recommended course of therapy for PMDD is 20 mg of Generic Prozac administered every day of the menstrual cycle or daily for 14 days prior to the onset of menstruation through the first day of menses. It is strictly prohibited to chew, break, or open a capsule of Prozac. You must try to swallow the pill in its entirety, as it has been especially designed to gradually release its ingredients in the person consuming it. A double dose of Prozac should not be taken in case you miss a dose. Instead, you may take the missed dose of Prozac as soon as you remember. If you are shortly scheduled to take your next dose of Prozac, then it is advisable to wait for some time and then take the medicine and skip the missed dose. In the event of an overdose of Prozac, seek immediate medical attention.

It is important that you consult your doctor for a proper dosage instructions as your Prozac dosage may be prescribed based on your condition. You may also refer to the instructions mentioned in detail on the patient information leaflet that comes along with this medicine or consult your pharmacist or a nurse about the same. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may start you at a low Prozac dose and gradually increase your dose. It is imperative that you discuss with your prescriber how long it will take before you can expect or feel any benefits by taking Prozac. During the first three months of treatment with Prozac you must regularly visit your doctor for monitoring. You must not stop using Prozac (even if you begin to feel better with its use) without first consulting your personal physician, as this could trigger severe side effects.

Since everyone reacts in a different manner to a medicine, it is difficult to predict which side-effects you will experience by taking a particular medicine, or whether you will have any side-effects at all. In the same way, Prozac side effects may or may not occur but may certainly differ from person to person. Side effects like Headache, Dizziness, Decreased appetite and weight loss, Allergic reactions like Skin Rash, Dry mouth, Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia), Fatigue and Sweating may be noticed. One may also experience Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain. Kindly intimate your doctor immediately if you encounter any of these symptoms. There could also be an increased risk of side effects if Prozac is taken with duloxetine, Sibutramine, triptans for migraine, e.g. sumatriptan, tramadol or tryptophan, which enhance the activity of serotonin in the brain. The herbal remedy St John's Wort should not be taken with Prozac for the same reason. Generic Prozac may increase the effect of anti-blood-clotting medicines (anticoagulants) such as warfarin which may increase the risk of bleeding. If you are taking an anticoagulant Generic Prozac, your blood clotting time (INR) should be regularly monitored.

If you do not feel better and your condition does not improve, you need to inform your doctor who may make an adjustment in your dosage.
