Anti-freeze Insulation For Water Tanks

. Water is necessary in the cultivation and abundance of life. Inadequate water cannot support life. In dealing with livestock, a constant supply of clean water must be ensured so that income is generated steadily.

It has long since been demonstrated that cool water in summer and water not excessively chilled in winter is best for dairy animals. Dairy animals are more able to drink from cups that have accumulated ice in winter than from water tanks that has frozen over. Four to five pounds of water enables a cow to produce a pound of milk, thus making constant water intake by the cows essential, especially during winter.

It is possible to stop the freezing over of water tanks during winter by mounting insulation measures. During the summer months, it is highly encouraged to keep a lid over the water tanks so that sunlight does not come in direct contact with water and bacterial growth is prevented.

We assessed two Iowa tanks separately in two different locations in the state and we found that these tanks did not freeze in winter. Hollow tiles and cement composed one of the tanks while the other one is constructed out of concrete and enclosed within a small tank house. The concrete tank has never developed sheets of ice during winter, according to the farmer who owns the tank.

What the owner did was construct two walls on the cover with sawdust between the walls. The insulation of the other tank was constructed using ordinary building tiles that were laid five inches in thickness. The foundation of the water tank rises from three feet below the ground and the double walls were built from the same level.

Animals are able to drink from the water tank through the three holes on the lid which is made of hollow tiles and cement. Frost develops around these openings but the ice has always been thin enough for the fingers to break apart. Water tank walls constructed in the same manner halts the process of condensation from occurring.

An underground tank built with natural insulation costs minimally and this is one of its primary advantages. The water tank, if constructed above the ground instead of below it, will have an increased risk of freezing.

The outside wall does not have to subject to the same process. The broad top interior of the tank is responsible for the propulsion of sheets of ice upward and the dispersal of the pressure from the walls of the tank. This was imparted to us by the owner of concrete tanks from northern Iowa.

Cover for water tanks should be constructed with reinforced hollow building tiles and concrete as this would be best, according to the owner of the hollow tile tank. The formation of frosty air in winter or hot air in summer can be prevented by this structure which is permanent and more stable. The transmission of heat and cold is naturally prevented by the presence of dead air space in the structure of the tile.
