Antibiotics And Leaky Gut Syndrome

Antibiotics come from the greek words anti and bios meaning "against" and "life" respectively. They were developed primarily for the treatment of bacteria. Antibiotics are taken by people who suffer from increased bacterial growth in their system. Generally the body is able to combat harmful bacteria in our bodies with our white blood cells. However, there are instances when it becomes too much for the body to handle naturally and ingestion of antibiotics becomes necessary to kill bacteria. The problem though with antibiotics is that it usually does not discriminate between good and bad bacteria. So the drug will kill good bacteria that are found in our gut along with the harmful ones. Remember that in order for our gut to properly digest food there is a necessary balance of good and bad bacteria that must be maintained. Antibiotics can upset this balance by killing too much good bacteria. These bacteria are indispensable in the proper digestion of food and the breakdown of substances to a level which is less harmful. Take bile for example, it is produced by the liver as a byproduct of detoxification. Bile is very toxic and dangerous to the body, but when it passes through the small intestine it is broken down by good bacteria into less toxic and more tolerable substances. If we remove or lessen the numbers of these bacteria then functions such as the ones mentioned above will not be done properly. Damage will obviously be caused to the intestine and more often than not this damage will affect the intestinal walls. If these walls weaken then they become permeable to larger substances that are normally kept from passing through. Instead of only the necessary nutrients being able to go through the intestine and into the bloodstream food particles, toxins and bacteria can now pass through the intestinal wall as well. Alternative medicine has been very successful at both recognizing and treating this condition with a proper leaky gut diet which can do wonders with managing and even eliminating many of the symptoms related to leaky gut.In this manner antibiotics have their tendencies to either expedite the degradation of the intestinal wall or in severe cases not only expedite but are the root cause of leaky gut syndrome. Despite the lack of intention to damage the digestive system, it is just the nature of antibiotics to have such a side effect.
