Anything between 20 and 80 years seems to be the common consensus as to the meaning of vintage for a table lamp. If they were made longer ago than that, antique seems to be the description for them. It does not seem to be defined as a particular era but changes as time passes.

There does appear to be a different explanation though depending on the actual item. Something that would be considered vintage sooner would be wine.

Returning to black table lamps, vintage ones will be perfect and look excellent in a traditional home. On the table of a contemporary modern home, they may not look right.

Back in the early part of the 20th century the time and effort put into their manufacture was probably more dedicated than nowadays. The ones we can buy now were surely manufactured to last. Contemporary lamps do not seem to be anything like as ornate and do not have the same intricate decorations as the vintage ones. Today's models seem to be much simpler in design.

They were both a pleasure to look at as well as being long lasting. Yet, they never seemed to be too complicated in design in spite of all that. They can be found in a size or shape to suit whatever your needs might be.

A recent change has been the introduction of plain colored lamps. You could not buy plain black table lamps then. Brass was probably the most common material used. Others were pottery, glass and cast iron.

Your family and friends will comment on your antique table lamps much more favorably than the contemporary ones if your home includes both styles. They may not believe you when you tell them how old the lamps are.

The shades on the lamps were often just as decorate as the stands were as well. Glass was often used to make them as well.

There has been a big move forward in electricity since then. The fittings should be checked to confirm that they are still safe to use. Get them rewired if they are not.

Bedroom, kitchen, dining room and living room will all benefit from old style table lamps. If you use them as bedside table lamps, they will make your bedroom a lot more stylish.
