Anxiety Still Plagues Hurricane Katrina Survivors
Seven years had passed since the tragic day when that hurricane Katrina touched land in the United States
. And to this day, men and women who have survived the ordeal still remember that fateful day. The citizens in New Orleans have now gotten back on their feet and moved on with their lives. Following the aftermath of the hurricane, the Discovery Channel has indicated that an estimated $75 billion was lost during this disaster. The whole world had seen the tragedy and several countries had given monetary contributions to help in giving aid to the sufferers. One of the biggest contributors was Kuwait who donated half a billion US dollars as aid. It is no wonder why some of the victims have developed anxiety and depression. They may need to receive
treatment for both illnesses.
Properties were not they only thing that was lost but lives too, with a confirmed death toll of 1,836. Somebody had lost a mother, a father, a brother or a sister during this 200 kilometer per hour storm. Last 2010, the ABC News in the United States of America has released a documentary about life five years after the hurricane Katrina. Questions of "what if"s" and "why" still crosses the mind of some who have been there when it all happened. Residents do admit that they still have a long way to go in recovering what they have lost but they are hopeful of what the future might bring. Though, there is no denying that some have developed trauma over what had happened. Post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is what most of the Katrina victims are suffering and for some, it still continues up to this day. Surviving the third most deadly storm to have hit America, people were dazed at first and could not believe that their house is underwater, their properties have been destroyed, and family members are missing.
A researcher, Dr. Ron Kessler from Harvard Medical School, had been investigating about the after effects of Katrina to the survivors. Dr. Kessler believed that two years after the incident, the rates of mental problems would go down, especially those who are experiencing PTSD. Although reassessing the people after two years, they have gotten quite different results, instead of a decreasing pattern, Dr. Kessler shared in an interview with Alix Spiegel that the numbers have increased. This unexpected turn of events have increased people"s awareness that better mental health programs are needed. See this page to learn more on the management of depression and anxiety.
