Apache Tomcat has a long and storied history. While you are probably already aware of Tomcat if you write JavaServer Pages or use Servlets to provide the functionality of your Web site, you may not know its history in the pantheon of Java platforms.
Apache Tomcat is a free, feature complete, open source software implementation of the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages specifications that were developed under the standard Java Community Development Process . Servlets are a type of Java application that plug into special web servers called Servlet Containers (originally Servlet Engines). The Java Community Development Process was an evolution of the original Java Standards Development Process. George Paolini and Pat Sultz of Sun drove the idea of the community process, and a team which included Gina Centoni, Elisa Steele (now the CMO of Yahoo!), Astrid Coleman, Jean Elliot, and several others, was the group that helped developed program).
Tomcat eclipse started life as a reference implementation under the original Java Standards Development Process within Sun Microsystems in the early days of Java. In 1999, three years after the original development of the platform, Sun donated the Java Web Server code to the Apache Foundation. At this point, Tomcat implemented the Java Servlet 2.2 and JSP 1.1 specifications and, with this underlying infrastructure, was released as Apache Tomcat Version 3.0. Tomcat 3.0 was mainly used by developers of servlets and JSPs as a test platform for code.
Today Tomcat manager is much more than just a test server. Many individuals and corporations are using Tomcat in production environments because it has proven to be robust and stable.
The current release of Version 3 is R3.3.2, which can be downloaded from the Apache archives. After Version 3.0 , the next major release tracks came to market as follows:
Version 4.0 (codenamed Catalina) was released in October 2001, implementing Java Servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2 specifications. Catalina was a complete redesign of the Tomcat architecture, and built on a new code based that included a redesigned Tomcat JSP engine known as Jasper. (Tomcat "Catalina" is also often used to refer to the Tomcat servlet container specifically, although this is a misnomer). Apache Tomcat 4.0 also supports web applications built for the Servlet 2.2 and JSP 1.1 specifications with no changes. The current release is Version 4.1.4 which was released in June, 2009.
Version 5.0 was released in October 2002 and supports the Servlet 2.4 and JSP 2.0 API specifications (also known as Jasper2). In addition to supporting the new features of these specifications, Tomcat 5 also introduced many improvements over its predecessors.
Version 5.5 was released in November, 2004 with substantial Tomcat performance and feature enhancements over the 5.0 branch. If you asked many Tomcat enthusiasts, a dot release was a misnomer for a product upgrade that was much more than bug fixed and feature tweaking. For example, Tomcat 5.5 allowed Tomcat to run directly on a JRE without the need for a JDK - which was a major change in the product. Today the latest release is Version 5.5.28, brought to market in September, 2009.
Tomcat Version 6 builds upon the improvements made was released in December 2006, and supports the Servlet 2.5 and JSP 2.1 specifications.
As with any enterprise software, multiple versions of a product remain in the marketplace because some critical legacy applications that a specific enterprise depends on may only be compatible with a prior version of the software. Even today, organizations deploy tomcat in multiple versions either in test labs or production settings.
