Apartment Decorating Advice
When you move into an apartment, it is different than moving into a home
. An apartment is part of a shared community. It is a subdivision of a larger complex. This gives the space a variety of inherent qualities which are unique, and have to be accounted for when creating an interior atmosphere.
First of all, an apartment is generally smaller than a home. There are exceptions, and some condos can be quite large, however even these do not come with the owned property that a house generally gives you. Even a small yard that you own is far different from sharing a courtyard with an apartment complex.
Since space is limited, on a relative scale, you have to make more choices when choosing decorative items. You may not have endless rooms to put to any use you can imagine. Instead you should consolidate concepts, choosing one or two themes, and using them to create a web of interest across the entire place.
In this way size can be a bonus, because it will be easier to tie the entire location together under a single theme.
Another thing you should consider when setting up your apartment is noise. You don't want to intrude too heavily on the lives of your neighbors. In an apartment people often share a single wall, which can be a living room on one end, and a bedroom on the other.
On the one hand, you should be considerate of there's, and be sure to put items like speaks and televisions set against a wall which faces the outside, rather than another room. On the other hand, when setting up your own bed, be aware that the people next door might not always be so considerate, and so put the bed against a wall with your head facing into a protected corner, or against a wall facing the outside.
Part of the draw, and the problem, with living in an apartment, is that you are not buying something that you own autonomously. Instead you are joining a community, where you have to be considerate and respectful of the needs of others. You also have to do your best to set up your home so that you are comfortable in relation to the other people in that community. However this can be a good thing, as it forces you to live in the world rather than isolating yourself from it.
