Apartment Decorating Tips
Today, apartment living is becoming more popular than ever
. Unfortunately this means having to live in reduced spaces leaving people wondering how they can decorate and manage with the space they have. Apartment rental units seem to all have the same basic things, tan carpet, neutral glossy paint and if you're lucky, cheap, plastic mini blinds. With permission, many apartment managers will allow you to do some painting and decorating, though some require you to repaint it white again before you move out or be charged.
Some of the key features of living in an apartment are that they are more compact and lack the extra space often found in larger homes. Its important to get down to the essentials when you decorate your apartment so that you don't overfill your new home and make it feel crammed. While the smaller living quarters of an apartment can be challenging and leave one feeling a little claustrophobic, with a few apartment interior design techniques, you can make your space feel much more inviting and appear much larger than it actually is.
Drapes and Blinds
Many renters do not think they can change what blinds they have in their apartment and accept things like annoying vertical blinds many come with. Setting up your new home so that it is your own is important to feel like you have a home and not just a place to put your things. Window treatments are an easy place where you can make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of your apartment.
A simple cornice is another great way to add class to a room by making it feel taller while covering up your curtain rods and mini blind headrail. One way you can make your windows seem bigger and thus make the rooms feel more open, is to hang curtains on the wall space out wider than the actual window is creating a different feel to the room.
Glass and Mirrors
One good way to make a small living area feel more open is to use a glass top dining table. Solid wooden tables will make your rooms feel smaller and heavy, but if you use glass end tables and a glass coffee table, it will again add to an open feeling in your apartment. The same is true with the use of mirrors; of course, you want to use them sparingly, but mirrors can create the illusion of more space while reflecting light to make the entire apartment brighter and more welcoming.
There are many ways in which you can turn your apartment into a model showcase or simply an area where you can be comfortable while still making it look its best. One major issue when living in an apartment is to find a way to store all of your belongings. Some apartment dwellers have complained that they wish there was more storage built into the design of their apartment. Even though you can't make your apartment any bigger, you can find some good ways to increase your storage space. Another good storage option is to get a platform bed with some drawers underneath or use special plastic bins that can slide under your bed. If you were to use a corner tv stand or hang a flat screen tv on your wall, you can free up extra space for seating or other piece of furniture. Simple steps like these help you make your apartment feel more open and allow traffic to flow more easily.
