Apartments - Do You Know What To Expect?
Moving out on your own can be an exciting time in your life
. At long last, you will be out from under the wing of your parents. Want to stay up until 6 in the morning? You're free to do so! Want to fill your refrigerator with beer and junk food? The choice is yours! With all of that freedom, of course, comes a lot of responsibility. Some young adults are primed and ready to take on that responsibility, while others quickly realize that living in their little room at home wasn't so bad after all. If you're not sure what to expect, here's an overview of what living in apartments entails.
Filling Out Forms
Unless your landlord is really desperate for tenants (which probably isn't a good sign in and of itself), you'll need to apply if you want to live in their complex. This can be difficult for a lot of young people living on their own for the first time, as they have little background on which to rely. On the other hand, you don't have a lot of bad credit and negative issues in your past to explain. You'll need to be prepared to provide back account information, references, job information, and more when applying for apartments. Some places have begun asking for social media information as well, but it's up to you whether or not you consider that too much of an invasion.
A Lengthy Lease
You've made it past the application process and the landlord has invited you to stay in the apartments. Now you will be presented with a legally binding lease. Unfortunately, this lease will probably be handed to you with a mark next to the place where you should sign and someone standing over you, pressuring you to rush through the process. This is fine. Sign where you need to sign and move on. But later, at your leisure, you'll want to read over the lease very carefully. It could have many of the answers you need about what can and cannot be done during your stay. Keep it in an easy to find place in case you need to refer back to it at a later time.
Neighbors
If you've lived in a house your entire life, you should be ready for a period of adjustment. Even the best apartments have one major drawback: noise from neighbors. It will be a factor in your life (unless, of course, you are the one causing most of the problems). If it's out of control, try and settle it with either your neighbors or the landlord. If it's reasonable, you'll have to live with it until the lease it up. Just don't get caught off guard. It's a part of the system.
