Apis Research Into Steel Products Used In Petroleum And Other Liquid Gas Facilities

The American Petroleum Institute develops and communicates standards for the steel pipes

, steel casing and other steel products used in a variety of infrastructure and construction projects. Primarily used in the petroleum industry, the use of API pipe work and API casing ensures industry standards for a geographically diverse enterprise. Having reliable standards makes the ease of communicating and understanding the materials being used more streamlined.

One aspect of the work the API does is to perform research into economic, environmental and toxicological impact of materials used in a wide variety of projects. The API has many other purposes as a trade association among which is to represent the businesses involved in all aspects of the petroleum industry, negotiation with governmental and regulatory agencies, and with establishing and certifying industry standard practices. The standards are published - and widely distributed - yearly. Using these standards helps to develop a more efficient and cost productive operation. It contains the latest information on regulatory and other legal requirements of the use of API steel in projects which protect health, safety, the environment and the proper functioning of the pipe works.

The American Petroleum Institutes' brochure on the use of API steel, API pipe work, and API casing work is organized to maximize the understanding of the best and safest industry practices. Although many topics are covered, the following topics are extensively covered and of use both within and outside the petroleum industry:

*Guidelines for Property Development - this section is designed to bring about awareness of the underground pipe work that transports oil, petroleum, natural gas and other hazardous materials so that property development projects follow the proper protocol. Issues of stress corrosion cracking are raised as well as the best practices to mitigate this problem.

*Steel Pipeline Crossing Railroads and Highways - this section is designed to ensure public safety practices are met without fail for steel pipe work under railroads and highways.

*Welding of Pipelines and Related Facilities - this section of the publication covers gas and arc welding practices that are used in a variety of compression, pumping and transmission projects of a wide variety of petroleum products. This section also discusses the standards for inspection be it in radiographic, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic or visual testing.

*Marking Liquid Petroleum Pipeline Facilities - this section of the API's publications discusses issues of permanently marking pipeline facilities used in transporting petroleum products.

*Pressure Testing of Steel Pipelines for the Transportation of Gas Petroleum, Petroleum Gas, Hazardous Liquids, Highly Volatile Liquids or Carbon Dioxide - in this section a variety of pressure tests are expanded upon so that operators of pipelines can choose the maximal tests to ensure function and safety of the pipelines.
