Appetizer Tips For The Inexperienced Party Host

Offering multiple light appetizers for your guests can add a lot of value to a party

. Finger foods such as different types of cheeses are usually a big hit. Likewise, the classic combo of chips and dip is another popular choice, but it does not have to end there! There are many possibilities that you may not have thought of. A quick glance at some modern recipes, and a trip to the local farmers market or grocery store, should inspire you.

Even if you do not have much experience in the kitchen, don't be afraid of a little cooking. Going all out and overdoing it is not necessary, but a little love and preparation can go a long way. Sometimes even simple recipes will dazzle your guests. It is all about presentation and not going overboard with too many ingredients.

You can never go wrong with simple food as long as it is fresh. Avoid processed ready made food from the supermarket. Half an hour, or even a couple minutes, of preparation separates the winners from the losers. Another good idea is a stainless steel juicer to quench your guests thirst! You can buy a large amount of a single fruit, or even a sampling of some more exotic ones.

If you are the type that likes popping open a couple bags of chips, mixing a packet of dust in a container of sour cream, and throwing it out on the table, consider making your own dip instead. Dips are incredibly fast and easy to make. My personal favorite is a light crab dip. Your guests will be champing at the bit for that one! If you are ambitious you could even make your own chips. A twist such as sweet potato chips are a nice change of pace.

The classic cold appetizers such as finger sandwiches, deviled eggs, tapas, pinwheels are another option. Again, make sure you are using fresh ingredients and prepare the latest you can before your guests arrive. Nobody wants to munch on soggy, rotting food made days before.

If you want to make some hot appetizers, you can prepare them in advance, then throw them in the oven when you're about ready to serve them. You want to bring them straight out of the oven and distribute them immediately. This should be common sense, but I have been to parties where the host prepared hot food before any, or most, of the guests arrived. Then when people arrived, they were old and undesirable!
