More Than a Salad Dressing

Of the many products found in the home, vinegar is among the most useful and versatile. Vinegar is more than an ingredient for salad dressing. It is more than a flavor enhancer. When combined with other ingredients it becomes an effective cleaning agent and health care product. Vinegar is so versatile it can also be used in the treatment and prevention of some medical conditions. Vinegar is easy to obtain and costs very little. Vinegar is a natural product safe to use anywhere in the home and poses no threats to children or pets.

Storing vinegar is easy. Plastic spray bottles can be found in almost any grocery store. They are great for storing and using a vinegar based cleaner. Using a refillable bottle makes good economic and environmental sense. Because vinegar is non-corrosive the bottles will last quite a while. One important reminder: When using an unlabeled bottle be sure to clearly mark it to identify what is in it.

WARNING: Although vinegar is reported to offer some relief in the treatment of certain ailments and the prevention of others, it is not a substitute for qualified medical care and treatment.

Some people find relief from the pain of arthritis by taking 1 teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with water. It is recommended that this mixture be consumed twice each day.

To ease the pain of a sore throat, mix some apple cider vinegar with warm water. Gargle with it as you would mouthwash.

Drinking a glass of water with a tablespoon of vinegar before meals is said to aid in digestion.

Use apple cider vinegar to treat and prevent swimmer's ear. A 1/2 cup of water, boiled and allowed to cool with a 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar. A few drops in each ear after a trip to the pool or beach will do the trick.

When going to the ocean bring along a small bottle or spray bottle of undiluted apple cider vinegar to treat jelly fish bites. It is very effective.

A great tarnish remover for copper and brass can be made from vinegar and ketchup. Yup, ketchup. Mix 2 tbs. Vinegar With 4 tbs. ketchup. Use this like you would any other metal polish.

This was all we used to wash windows when I younger, 1 quart of water and 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar. Mix and use one of the spray bottles to apply.

A grease cutting cleanser for appliances can be made by combining 2 cups hot water, 1 tsp. of borax, and 1/4cup vinegar. Use a soft rag to apply and allow to stand for a few minutes then buff dry.

Counter tops dulled by use can be revitalized and their luster restored by mixing 1/2 cup cold water, 1/2 tsp. lemon or orange oil, 3 tbs. apple cider vinegar, I tsp. of Dish Detergent. Apply freely and buff dry.

Leather goods can be treated with a solution made from 1 teaspoon lemon or orange oil, 1/2 teaspoon dish detergent, 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar. Test it first to make sure it will not damage or stain the leather.
