Apple Had Been Using 5-pointed Torx Screws On Its Macbooks, Not Standard 6-pointed Torx Screws

The HP(HP DV1000 Battery) Pavilion DM1-1102sa is powered by the Intel Celeron SU7300 processor and is backed by 2GB of DDR3 memory. This processor offers sufficient performance for most daily tasks but isnt ideal for heavy-duty editing of video. With that in mind, we found it great for daily tasks, such as web surfing, checking email and updating Facebook.

Even though video might not be perfect, it's still nice to have the 1,366x768 screen resolution, as it makes using multiple windows and applications easier compared to the standard netbook 1,024x600 pixel screen. It's bright too with good contrast and reasonably accurate colours. Viewing angles are pretty good, too.

Audio performance was middling, too, with tinny media playback. The MSI(MSI Wind U100 Battery) Wind 12 U230 netbook does get suitably loud, but its sound quality dips from satisfactory to jarring at higher decibels. The performance of the 1.3Mp webcam is also less than stellar; test video footage we shot looked rather grainy.

Enough with the specs. What's noteworthy about this revamp -- and what Apple officials most like to talk up -- is that these laptops are not only faster at data-crunching because of those Core i5 and i7 chips, but they also offer substantially faster graphics -- and do both of those things while delivering much improved A1189 battery life. My experience so far shows that Apple appears to have hit the mark all around.

Plus, the whole thing is awkward to hold. It's a pound and a half and feels heavy for its size, and if you hold it without a cover it feels like it's going to slip out of your hands. And it doesn't come with any way of standing it up for, say, watching videos while stirring pudding on the stove. Apple(Apple M7318 Battery)'s official iPad case an additional $39 accessory that's now near impossible to find can stand it up, but that's an additional expense.

The second LCD steals a little focus from the main display. This 10.6-inch, 768-by-1280-pixel extra stashes inside the case behind the main screen; you simply push in to eject and retract the secondary screen. Once it's extended, you can bend it forward, angling the screen toward your face. The screen would work best on the left side, since your hands--and the touchpad--favor the left. When the extra screen is tilted, you can see it clearly, but it often looks slightly washed-out, especially next to the unwavering color of the main display. The additional screen works well if you use it for text and button palettes, and you keep color-sensitive work on the main display.

Ports remain the same, but all new MacBook(MacBook Pro 17" Batteries) Pros contain a small but important upgrade to their Mini DisplayPort-out jacks--they now output HDMI audio and video, whereas last year, audio had to be output via the 3.5mm audio jack. For those connecting to a TV, this means you only need a single Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable. While we'd prefer an HDMI port, at least this new solution is more streamlined than before.

In the past, these products and services catered primarily to business users; but their appeal to people who travel less frequently is growing, and carriers have begun introducing pay-as-you-go plans. Verizon Wireless, in particular, has rolled out options to buy service by the week, the month, or even the day.

On the software front, the EliteBook 2740p supports two "preboot" environments. When the machine is off, press the button marked with a globe, and HP(HP NC6400 Battery) QuickWeb opens in about 20 seconds, giving you a full-featured browser (complete with bookmarks and tabbed browsing) without booting into Windows. Otherwise, you can press the adjacent mail/clock button to launch HP QuickLook 3. This shell lets you quickly check your e-mail, contacts, and calendar without launching Windows and then opening Outlook.

The battery is just three screws and a connector away from being replaced. At Apple(Apple A1189 Battery), though, nothing is this simple. Apple had been using 5-pointed Torx screws on its MacBooks, not standard 6-pointed Torx screws. So head to the hardware store and get a 5-pointed Torx screwdriver, right?
