With a dedicated brand following, a market-leading reputation and a notorious lock-down on new product info, the highest profile gadget launch this year has to belong to Apple and the iPhone 4. This was a sign of things to come as Apple claimed 1.7 million iPhone 4 units sold in its first three days, thus setting a record for the iPhone product series and smashing sales forecasts. Jobs happily granted it the most successful product launch in Apple history as shares rose 27% during 2010.

The device continues to sell steadily in spite of the storm over its wireless antenna reception. The mobile phone's silver border acts as an antenna, a design feature supposed to boost reception in response to criticism of the 3G and 3GS models. However this has proved to be a major design fault as signal strength falls away when held easily over the lower left-hand corner. With criticism growing stronger and users growing churlish, Jobs fired off some brief emails, telling concerned iPhone owners to "just avoid holding it in that way".

Nevertheless, the antenna fault won't change the fact that between the iPad, iPhone 4 and new ad serving technology, 2010 has been Apple's greatest business year ever.
