Applying For Citizenship - Does It Matter?
Citizenship in the United States is an ideal goal of many who come from many different countries
, cultures, and backgrounds to enjoy the freedoms, democracy, and values this country stands for. The journey begins with knowing how to apply for citizenship. It can be an exciting time, but will require one to have patience in the process.
When you place an application for citizenship you can either get the official forms from the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services local office or print the forms from their website. On the application do include any and all information that is asked of you and provide the required documents to show proof of anything that can be misconstrued. Above all else honesty is the best policy.
Once your application is accepted and looked over, you will be required to supply your fingerprints. Your fingerprints are used in a database that is located within the Department of Justice who performs criminal background checks on all persons who have fingerprints on file with them. This background check is necessary to verify that you do not have a criminal record and for identification purposes. When you receive you appointment make sure that you also take along with you any supporting documentation that may be needed.
The native language of the U. S. Is English and in order to become a citizen of this country you must learn to speak, read, and write the national language reasonably well. You must learn it in order to take the civics exam that is given on the history and government of America. Once you pass this portion of the application process you are nearly there.
When you are interviewed you want to be as truthful about your past as well as your current life as possible. Any false statements made by you will result in your application being denied. Anything that obscure or vague needs to be clarified with proof. Once you have passed all exams and interviews you will be eligible to take the oath of allegiance.
It takes time to become a citizen of this country and will not happen overnight. Once you have passed all the previous stages all that is left is the citizenship ceremony. This is where you become an official citizen of this country and receive your certificate and take your oath.
If your application is continued, it means there are certain facts that need to be verified or proof shown to resolve the issues. When the necessary proof is given, the process can continue and will either be approved or denied. When you are denied, you can appeal the process through the proper channels. Once approved you will need to get a passport to further document your citizenship and provide proof of it if needed, in case you lose your certificate and must wait for a replacement.
