Applying The Correct Grip

Applying The Correct Grip

Applying The Correct Grip

In every good golf swing the right and left sides of the body play an equal part - a balance that is best achieved when the hands work together as a single unit. Applying the correct grip will allow for more control of the club leading to longer and straighter shots.

The problem that many right handed people have is that they are inclined to grip the club too much in the palm of the right hand almost as if grabbing hold of a hammer. The placement of the right hand in this position will lead to it dominating the left and from here all sorts of problems can develop.

Golfers tend to grip the club in such a way as it instills a sense of power but what it actually does is create a number of problems which jointly render the swing powerless. The main problem with the hand in this dominant position is that it leads to the club being picked up almost entirely by the right hand which destroys any chance of creating width and control in the golf swing.

This jerky picking up of the club at the start of the backswing disturbs the alignment of the clubface, and encourages too much use of the shoulders, arms and hands to hit the ball from the top of the backswing.

To prevent this from happening and to unite the left and right hand on the grip, the right hand must be placed in what is described as a 'neutral' position. Once this has been achieved you will see the benefit of the proper coordination between hand and body movement.

To allow for better control and feel the grip should be held primarily between the fingers of the right hand and not the palm. The grip or handle should run diagonally across the joints of the fingers from the base of the little finger, through the joints of the second and third fingers and on to the middle of the index finger.

When the right hand is applied to the grip correctly your view of the left thumb should be totally obscured. The thumb of the left hand fits in to the fleshy pocket beneath the right thumb. The hands fit nice and snugly together so as to work as a unit.

You can check to see that you apply the right hand correctly by making sure that it runs parallel to the left. The 'v's formed between the thumb and the index finger of each hand should point somewhere between the chin and the right shoulder. There should also be a gap between the index and second finger of the right hand. The index finger is hooked around the grip in what can be described as a trigger position.

From this grip it is possible to unite the hands further with either the Interlocking or Vardon grip. Choose one that feels most comfortable, neither is right or wrong. The interlocking is favoured by Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, the Vardon by Nick Faldo, Phil Michelson.

Regardless of which one that you choose, applying the correct grip in the manner described will encourage the hands to work together, discourage snatching the club.
