Appreciating Heroes From Miami To Key West
There are many military bases that have been established from Miami to Key West distance and throughout all of Florida
. They were created for use in many wars and some of them still stand today to be visited. They are armories and stations that held the members of the armed forces themselves or their weapons. They have now been added to a list of historic sites to be visited while in the vicinity. The first is the Armory which is located on White Street.
It was created in 1902 and is a remaining site that was not demolished in the 1960s. It is a part of the Old Town in Key West and is symbolic of a battle that took place in the area. It was scheduled to be torn down, but one man who understood the history behind the Armory stood up for it and asked for it to be remodeled and saved as a historic site in the Keys. Another place of military importance is the Trumbo Naval Air Station. This location was established in 1917 and was originally supposed to be used for a railroad. Blimps (or dirigibles) were placed here on Trumbo Point during World War I. This spot was an advantage and was used for training and as a base during these wars. There are also numerous warships that are still around in the Keys today. A few of them are USCGC Mohawk and Ingham.
There is also the Marine Hospital and the Submarine Base to be visited in Key West. They contain bits of the battles the men that used these places saw. They hold history and make you humbled when you walk in and see what took place in the past. Florida, as a whole, has many military hot spots and there are some along the string from Miami to Key West. There is the Wings Over Miami Air Museum and the Armed Forces History Museum in Largo.
This is also the home to the Museum and Library of the 2506 Assault Brigade. This Museum is a remembrance of the Bay of Pigs issue, as well as a library that includes information on the events. In northern Florida there are more museums and bases. There is the Camp Blanding Museum and Memorial Park in Starke. There is the Air Force Armament Museum in the Eglin Air Force Base and the Air Force Space and Missile Museum in Patrick AFB, Florida, as well. These museums preserve the history of the military feats in Florida.
There is a large focus on the Air Force throughout this area, as well as the Navy. While in Florida, one should look into the history of the military that lies within it. The numerous museums help preserve history and honor the veterans that fought for the country. They span the country, but there are many historic sites located right in Florida.
