Problem behavior in class arises every time. In fact, this is the most difficult part of any teaching job out there. Resolving such an issue in class is really challenging. The difficulty stems from the fact that behavior problems in class come in different forms. Unfortunately, each of these students has their own nature and motives as to why they did such a thing.
Teachers are faced with a diverse group of students from families of different natures. This discrepancy alone is a problem in itself. Often, some of them are not very open in terms of their backgrounds, making them more difficult to understand. As teachers, we must handle a class in its entirety and never leave a student behind. So if you have a student or two that you think you have a problem behavior, it is essential to follow these steps to resolve it properly.
Step 1: Make a list of different behavioral problems. It is important to identify the various concerns that you have in your class. Be specific as possible and indicate which particular student did it. The aim here is to be precise with the name and action. If possible you can even indicate the day or time it occurred. You can list the things you observe so are the ones reported by your students. But do not list the venues that are touching on the emotional side of a particular individual.
Step 2: Target one to two behaviors. This is the time for you to strategize and work on resolving the issue at hand. After you have identified the different problematic behaviors it is time to set forth some actions. This is actually a trial and error process. Base on the behavior, list down probable solutions that you think can address it. Each day, apply your series of solutions and record how their behavior changed given a strategy. As stated a solution might not be effective so you had better have a back up!
Step 3: Educate students. As a teacher you are there to educate students not only the subject they are enrolled in, but also behavior in general. Thus, it is also a teacher's task to teach them lessons in life and proper decorum. It is also effective if we will speak before the whole class. You can discuss morals and values and be educated and brainstorm with them if is indeed better or worst. It can also be an activity of reflection on their end.
Being a teacher is indeed a great responsibility. It comes with a greater task at hand. Therefore, it is our responsibility to inculcate the student life with morals and disciplines. This is also an opportunity to change their evil deeds and habits and to help them become more productive in the future with your aid. Take the problem behavior as a challenge and never a burden on your end.
