Besides the coastal beaches, Central Kenya highlands
, national parks, and culture, there is more for tourists to enjoy in Kenya. There are numerous archaeological sites where fossils remains have been found. Kenya is one of the major places which are considered the origin of man. Below is a selection of some of the archaeological sites in Kenya, which will surely be worth visiting while you are on safari in Kenya.
Koobi Fora is located on the eastern shores of Lake Turkana in the North of Kenya. The site comprises of silt, sand and clay stones that have preserved a lot of fossils. The site is a source of hominin fossils, which show evolution of man over 4.2 million years. A large number of stone tools have also been excavated from Koobi Fora. Koobi Fora is best known for the genus Homo as well as the genus Australopithecus.
Hyrax Hill is another prehistoric site in Kenya located near Nakuru town. It is a major Neolithic site in the country, dating back from 1500BC. It contains remains of tombs, settlements, and a stone fortress. Some beheaded bodies were found as well as Iron Age exhibits.
Sirikwa holes are round depressions, with diameters of 15m on average, 2.4m deep. They were mainly built on hillsides, surrounded by stone walls. They occur in clusters of even up to 100 and have over the years been covered by bushes and grasses. They run from Lake Turkana, to the foot of Mt Elgon, Hyrax Hill, Cherangani, Moiben, Soy, Sotik among other areas.
Gedi ruins are found at the Kenyan coast near Malindi, and contain the remains of a Swahili town known as Gedi. The community thrived between the 13th and 17th century. Remains that have been dug up show that trade took place between the people hear and others all over the world. This is confirmed by beads from Venice, coins from China, lamp from India, scissors from Spain and other items. A museum was opened which displays a collection of these items. There is a mosque, palace and stone houses in Gedi. There are also wells which were used to supply water. Currently, there are numerous guenon monkeys which inhabit the site.
Olorgesailie is a geological site located on the floor of the Rift valley on the eastern side along the road to Lake Magadi. It is mainly known because of Acheulean hand axes which were found there and are associated with animal butchering. Fossils of a number of animals have also been found there and include extinct species of animals such as buffalos, zebras, elephants among others which are believed to have been butchered by use of the hand axes.
