Archery - Gearing Up For Safety
As hunters we all know the basic steps in getting ready for a hunt.We have our bow
, and our backpack with all the essentials, we've even dressed from head to toe in clothing to help us blend into our environment. But aside from all the obvious items, how many of us plan for the "what ifs" in a hunting trip? Not many of us plan for an accident while out hunting; there are more immediate details on our mind. But accidents do happen, and no one is exempt, so at the very least, you should plan to be prepared.
Among all the essential items you include in your hunting trip, you should also include a first aid and survival kit.But remember, including them is only the first step, knowing what is in the kit and how to use it, is how you prepare yourself.
Every hunter at some point of their lives, for some reason or another, has taken a course in First Aid and CPR.If you are just getting into Archery and have never taken such a course, consider taking one now, it could save a hunters life or possibly your own.
Knowing that you have your first aid and survival kit along can give you peace of mind, you feel prepared and ready. Before you pack your first aid kit, familiarize yourself with its contents.Read the emergency booklet that comes with your kit, so you are familiar with how to handle a situation should it arise.Just having the first aid and survival kit alone, will not save someone's life, you have to know how to use it.
When familiarizing yourself with the first aid kit, make sure it is stocked well, to deal with serious accidents, such as major bleeding caused by a cut from a broadhead or possible injuries from hunting knives. You can be ready for these situations by simply adding a couple of items, such as a large dressing pad, sanitary napkin or a triangular bandage.
Consider personalizing your kit for your specific needs, by adding emergency doses of prescription drugs and over the counter medications, you use regularly.
In addition to the first aid kit, you should also carry a survival kit.One that will sustain you for a day or two, this is especially important if you hunt alone, and heaven forbid, you do not make it out of the woods at night.
Some items this kit should contain are:
1. Waterproof fire starting material
2. A signaling device, like a whistle or possibly a small mirror or even a piece of fluorescent orange material.
3. High energy food bars or packs of trail mix.
4. A large square of plastic or space blanket
5. Flash light and extra batteries All of these things can easily fit into your backpack, that way you will be sure to have the items with you.
Before your hunting group breaks, and you each go into the woods, take a few moments to discuss first aid and CPR, by doing so will prepare you mentally, and each person will know what to expect from the group if he or she is injured. And it will also predetermine who will apply CPR if needed.Knowing these things ahead of time allows you to act fast in case of an emergency.
We all like to feel evincible, but we are not, with a little bit of planning and some additional packing, you can be prepared for the unexpected.
