Architecture Schools - Available Degree Programs
The art and science that goes into creating structures starts with the use of architects that are trained in the design and construction of a building. The exclusive knowledge needed to be an architect has to be earned through a higher education degree. Degree programs are available through architecture schools in order to help students obtain the quality training they will need to enter the field.
To become an architect a bachelor's degree is required. In order to advance inside a career in a particular area of architecture most students work through a master's degree program where study is highly focused on broadening student's knowledge. PhD programs are for students that want to enter teaching, government, or a consultation career where a high level of experience and specialization is required. These three programs make up the overall field of architecture. An associate's degree can be acquired but students should expect to only enter assistant positions inside the industry.
All the fundamental knowledge needed to succeed as an architect can be gained through a bachelor's degree program. Education gives students a broad overview, which includes topics on design, technology, and history.
A typical four-year program teaches students core courses in the first two years. Basic design, history, environmental control, research, and professional practice are included as basic courses.
The final two years students explore the architecture of different locales and spend a high amount of time in studio courses. These courses focus on helping students gain creative and technical skills that are incorporated into building projects and group assignments.
Students gain the necessary skills to sit for licensing exams and become a practicing architect. Further education at the master's degree level will provide students with even more in depth knowledge of the field.
Students working through a master's degree curriculum should expect it to include digital design training, and studies in structural engineering, building science, and theory. Most programs allow students to enter a specialty where they can work almost exclusively with architectural technology and green architecture. Knowledge is gained in how the roles of design, aesthetic procedure, and material use work together to form architecture. To finish out study and prepare students for the workplace a physical structural design has to be completed from beginning to end. This practical course shows that students can pull together their knowledge and create buildings.
For students that have gained work experience PhD programs are available that allow students to enter the teaching or consulting phase of a career as an architect. Students work with the five major areas of study to develop a strong academic base to utilize inside the industry. Training in computer aided drafting, building science, design, environmental design, history, and social architecture make up the five main areas of study. Within these areas students work to research and fully understand every aspect of architecture. At the end of two years students can enter the field qualified to teach others and consult with organizations on research or building projects.
Architecture is a discipline of study that requires a high level of skill and knowledge. Students that want to be architects have to complete a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or other agency to do so. Numerous architecture schools and colleges offer this degree distinction and students can begin education when they are ready.
